Lay out how the space will work
Sketch the furniture footprint, chair pullback and the path between the house and yard. Include gates, downspouts, steps and existing landscaping. A useful patio plan considers people moving around furniture, not just a rectangle’s total area. Describe future changes such as a shade structure separately so loads and approvals can be assessed.
Check thresholds and water movement
Show the provider where exterior doors meet the proposed surface. Ask how the layout handles drainage and transitions without creating an awkward step or sending water toward the house. Existing ground levels can change the scope. The provider should explain which conditions need a site assessment rather than promise a flat surface everywhere.
Choose texture for actual use
Compare finish samples for appearance, cleaning and traction when wet. Discuss barefoot use, shade and exposure rather than selecting by color alone. Ask what sealer, if any, is proposed and what maintenance it needs. Decorative choices should be described in the written scope, including how samples relate to the installed result.
Make access part of the quote
Narrow side yards, fences, overhead lines and planting beds can affect access for material and equipment. Identify what may need protection or temporary removal and who restores it. Ask whether hauling and disposal are included. Do not authorize removal of structures or utilities based only on an informal estimate.
Close the planning gaps
Ask who confirms property boundaries, applicable approvals and any association restrictions. Keep the agreed dimensions, finish, joints, cleanup and curing instructions together. Confirm the receiving business’s availability and charges before arranging work; this site does not guarantee an appointment.
Prepare a clearer conversation
Use the project planner to record the footprint, the quote comparison guide to check inclusions, and the finish guide to weigh appearance and care.
Before requesting quotes, map furniture, door clearance and water movement for your patio.
